Laser Therapy

Class 3 Cold Laser Therapy (Low-Level Laser Therapy – LLLT)
Class 3 cold lasers, also known as low-level lasers, are therapeutic devices that emit light in the red or near-infrared spectrum (typically 600–1000 nm) with a power output generally between 5 mW and 500 mW. Unlike Class 4 lasers (which produce heat), Class 3 lasers do not heat tissues—hence the term “cold laser.” Instead, they stimulate cellular function to promote healing.
How It Works:
Cold laser therapy works through a process called photobiomodulation, where light energy penetrates the skin and is absorbed by cells. This light stimulates the mitochondria (the cell’s energy center), increasing ATP (adenosine triphosphate) production, which enhances cellular repair and reduces inflammation.
Physiological Effects:
- Reduces Inflammation
- Suppresses pro-inflammatory mediators (like prostaglandins, COX-2)
- Promotes anti-inflammatory cytokines
- Relieves Pain
- Inhibits nerve depolarization
- Stimulates the release of endorphins
- Improves blood flow and lymphatic drainage
- Accelerates Tissue Healing
- Enhances fibroblast activity and collagen synthesis
- Promotes angiogenesis (formation of new blood vessels)
- Improves Nerve Function
- Increases nerve regeneration after injury
- Reduces pain associated with neuropathies
- Enhances Cellular Repair and Growth
- Increases cellular metabolism
- Promotes DNA and RNA synthesis for faster recovery
Conditions Treated with Class 3 Cold Laser:
- Tendonitis and bursitis
- Neck and back pain
- Arthritis (OA and RA)
- Plantar fasciitis
- Carpal tunnel syndrome
- TMJ disorders
- Soft tissue injuries (sprains/strains)
- Post-surgical healing
- Neuropathic pain
Treatment Characteristics:
- Non-invasive and painless
- Typically takes 5–20 minutes per session
- Requires multiple sessions for full effect
- Safe with minimal side effects (e.g., mild tingling, rare temporary increase in pain)
Contraindications/Precautions:
- Cancerous lesions
- Direct exposure to the eyes
- Pregnancy (avoid over the abdomen/uterus)
- Over thyroid gland
- Active bleeding areas
Class 3 cold laser therapy is a well-tolerated, drug-free treatment that promotes healing and pain relief, especially in musculoskeletal and inflammatory conditions. It is a popular modality in physical therapy, sports medicine, and rehabilitation settings. While more research is ongoing, evidence supports its effectiveness in reducing pain and inflammation and accelerating tissue repair.
